This collection contains: correspondence to Dr. Williams (1921-1958), including letters from Dr. Frederick Grant Banting concerning insulin research and correspondence from relatives of Mr. Havens, the first American insulin patient; articles written by and about Dr. Williams and his studies of metabolic diseases and food preservation; articles that Dr. Williams gathered while conducting research, including autographed articles in which Dr. Banting outlined his studies of the pancreas, diabetes, and his discovery of insulin; and memos, reports, and statistics Dr. Williams collected during his tenure as Chief of Medicine at Highland Hospital.

John Ralston Williams was a Rochester physician for 50 years, and Chief of Medicine at Highland Hospital for 30 years. He was born on December 27, 1874 in a log cabin in Renfrew, Ontario.
